ABSTRACT

Background: The elements of job satisfaction can be categorized into intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The presence of a higher level of intrinsic factors will result in increased motivation amongst employees, whilst extrinsic factors will result in job dissatisfaction. Decreased job satisfaction levels amongst healthcare professionals are known to create an intent to leave. Hence the need to explore these factors amongst radiographers employed by tertiary hospitals in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Objective: To determine the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors of job satisfaction on intent to leave amongst radiographers employed by public tertiary hospitals in the Gauteng province. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional survey guided the study, and a self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. The sampling technique used for this study was disproportional stratified sampling. Results: The study had a response rate of 62%. A significant number of the participants (50%) were between the ages of 21-33 years. Also, worth noting that 51% of the participants were newly qualified, 28% were employed for a period of 10-20 years and only 20% were employed for a period greater than 20 years. Diagnostic radiography had the most number of participants at 55%, followed by radiation therapist at 24%, nuclear medicine radiographers at 13%, mammography radiographers at 5% and only 3% were sonographers. Pearson's correlation showed a significant negative correlation with the following extrinsic factors: supervision, r= -.344, p=.000; satisfaction with PMDS, r=-.302, p=.000; human resources processes, r=-.249, p=.001; infrastructure, r=-.236, p=.001; the OSD policy, r=-.233, p=.002; satisfaction with remuneration, r=-.202, p=.006; satisfaction with CPD activities, r=-.201, p=.007; and satisfaction with equipment, r=-.163, p=.029. Conclusion: Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors are associated with an intent to leave amongst radiographers employed by public tertiary hospitals in the Gauteng province

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: An integrated geochemical and sedimentological study of the Campano- Maastrichtian sediment of Ajali and Owelli Formation exposed within the southern portion of the Anambra basin was undertaken to determine the sandstone provenance, tectonic setting, and paleo-weathering conditions. All sandstone samples are enriched in quartz (Q) but poor in feldspar (F) andlithic-fragments (L). The major-element concentrations of these sandstones reveal the relative homogeneity of their source. Geochemically, the sandstones are classified as quartzarenite, sub-litharenite, and subarkose. Tectonic setting discrimination diagrams suggest a passive continental margin. The sediments are enriched in SiO2 and depleted in Na2O, CaO and TiO2.Chemical index of weathering (CIW) of the sample suggests intense recycling and high degree of weathering in a humid climatic condition. Results of the elemental ratios critical of provenance compared to those of felsic and basic derived sediment of UCC and PAAS values suggests a felsic source rock. Cu/Zn, U/Th, Ni/Co and (Cu+Mo)/Zn paleo-oxygenation ratios used as redox parameters depicts an oxic environment. Finally, presence of minerals, like Anatase, Rutile and Microcline depicts an igneous and metamorphic source terrain

ABSTRACT

Diabetes has been shown to be associated with abnormalities in the metabolism of micronutrients, especially chromium, zinc, copper, magnesium, and manganese. People with type 2 diabetes attending the Diabetes Clinic of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, were recruited to examine the relationship between trace mineral status and glycaemic control. A total of 120 persons were studied, mean (±SD) age was 54±7 years and mean duration of diabetes 4±4 years. Serum chromium level correlated inversely with fasting blood glucose (FBG) and HbA1c, unlike the serum concentration of zinc which had no significant correlation with either FBG or HbA1c. People with diabetes should be encouraged to eat local specific foods rich in chromium

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Trace elements are required for the performance of numerous functions of immune cells. It is not clear whether levels of trace elements are elevated and whether there is a relationship between the levels of liver enzymes and trace elements in patients with sickle cell anaemia in crisis. OBJECTIVE: To compare the plasma levels of liver enzymes and trace elements in non sickle cell anaemia (NSCA); sickle cell anaemia subjects in the steady state (SCASS) and sickle cell anaemia patients in crisis (SCAC). METHODS: Haematological parameters; liver enzymes and trace elements were determined in 20 NSCA subjects; 20 SCASS subjects and 18 SCAC subjects. Variables studied included aspartate aminotransferase (AST) alanine aminotransaminase (ALT); alkaline phosphatase (ALP); and the trace elements copper; zinc; and manganese.
